Weight Loss Diets Don't Work

Weight is constantly being dictated by the lifestyle choices we make. There are precisely two components that determine body weight: calories IN, and calories OUT. That's pretty much it. Of course, some health issues can contribute to body weight, and it is always an excellent idea to check with your doctor before you embark on any kind of weight loss (read lifestyle change) program.

Losing weight isn't all that hard. You can just eat less and exercise more, and the pounds will come off. The food that's consumed during a weight loss program is called a "diet." But the fact is we all eat a "diet" every day. The foods chosen and the quantities consumed of those foods are what make up anyone's diet.

If you are really, really serious about taking off those extra pounds and keeping them off forever, you have to make some lifestyle changes, and those changes have to be permanent. Weight control is not a temporary task or an event — it is a journey.

A diet is all about choices. When you go out for lunch with friends, you can CHOOSE the burger (double meat and double cheese) and fries, or you can CHOOSE the grilled chicken sandwich with no fries. It's YOUR choice. You're the one ordering the food.

The same thing is true of snack food. You can CHOOSE the large bag of chips, a candy bar, and a regular soda or you can CHOOSE the small bag of pretzels and the diet soda. You're the one buying the snack.

Exercise is also a choice. You can choose not to exercise. I had a friend who told me her idea of exercise was jogging to the fridge. You have the power to decide to take that walk after dinner or watch TV.

Weight control is all about the choices we make each and every day. Diets alone don't work. They never have.

BONUS : Weight Loss Diets for Men

It seems that the entire weight loss industry promotes weight loss diets and products to women. You'd think that ONLY women could possibly ever need to lose weight. That's hardly the case. Men can and do have problems with weight control, and it seems that the weight loss industry has finally taken note of that fact and have now begun producing and promoting weight loss products and weight loss diets for men.

You'd think that weight control wouldn't be a big issue for men. Their metabolism is much, much higher than women, and men's bodies aren't actually designed to store fat. And yet men do gain weight. They do develop a "potbelly" or a "beer belly."

The fact is that this weight gain around the midsection poses a health danger to men. Belly fat in men has been linked to increased risks for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes.

The best diet strategy for men is not to have a diet strategy. Most men would rather not admit to their friends and colleagues that they are on "a diet." So simply determining the number of calories that he burns each day and adjusting his food (and drink) consumption to comply with that requirement is usually all of the diet strategy a man needs. And most often, the lifestyle adjustments are rather minor.

Of course, you see those advertisements of television that feature well-known men (usually athletes or coaches) promoting a particular diet plan. There's nothing wrong with that diet plan. It works.

But keeping the weight off once it has been lost is the other half of the weight control battle, and unless a man knows what caused his weight gain in the first place, he can't make the adjustments needed to prevent regaining the weight once the diet ends.
