The Causes of Infertility

When a couple has been trying to have a baby for more than a year and somehow haven't managed to conceive, they're probably facing the problem of infertility. Now, this can happen due to a variety of reasons in both women and men. The first step you need to take is to figure out where the problem lies and then work together as a team to sort it out. Let's get a better understanding of the possible reasons for infertility:

When it comes to women, decreased ovulation is one of the critical factors. Ovulation problems occur if certain parts of the reproductive system don't function properly, be it the adrenal glands, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid glands or genitals.

Stress aggravates the ovulation problem, as does age. If you're in your thirties or older, your ovulation would've slowed down considerably.

Then, there are certain medical conditions that can lead to infertility, such as problems with the cervix, blocked fallopian tubes, polycystic ovaries, uterine fibroids, abnormalities in the lining of the uterus, endometriosis and anatomic disorders.

The main reason for infertility in men is a low sperm count. Now, this can be due to various factors, such as one's lifestyle, wearing tight trousers or briefs, or even soaking in a hot tub for too long! All these factors can lower sperm count. In addition, there's a medical condition known as variocele which causes irregularly shaped sperm.

The good thing is, when it comes to lifestyle one can make certain changes to alleviate the problem of low sperm count. Quitting smoking, excessive drinking or using illicit drugs can go a long way in sorting out the problem.

Also, keep in mind that at times illness and medications can also cause a temporary lowering of sperm count, which thankfully, can be rectified.

Stress takes a huge toll on a couple's ability to conceive, as well as, stopping them for conceiving since they're so stressed out that they have to. So, do watch out for that pitfall. The best way to cope with stress is to:

- Enjoy sex for the sake of sex!
- Learn Eastern breathing techniques that alleviate stress or meditate
- Keep talking to your partner openly and offer each other emotional support
- Quit smoking and avoid excesses when it comes to consuming alcohol, caffeine or illegal drugs
- Exercise regularly to stay fit and be stress free
- Read up on infertility and its treatment.
- Get a medical evaluation immediately. Know the enemy before you attack it!

The good news is, when it comes to women, 90% of infertility issues can be successfully treated. All the best!

BONUS : The Causes of Male Infertility

If your partner and you are just not getting pregnant, know that you're not alone. As many as 10 to 15% of couples in the United States are facing infertility problems. Now, infertility may be due to one or multiple factors in your partner and/or you. But the good thing is, it can be treated and overcome. You see, for a woman to get pregnant she has to ovulate. Reproduction is a complex process where certain factors have to work just right at the right time.

What happens is, every month the pituitary gland in a woman's brain sends a signal to the ovaries to start preparing an egg for ovulation. The pituitary hormones then stimulate the ovaries to release the egg. This is the process of ovulation when a woman is considered most fertile. Now, the released egg goes through the fallopian tube and can be fertilized within 24 hours of its release.

A woman is most likely to conceive if she has unprotected sex a day or two before she ovulates. For pregnancy to occur, a sperm needs to unite with the egg in the fallopian tube during this brief window. Now, certain other conditions also have to be met for the woman to conceive. The man has to ejaculate enough sperm into the vagina and it has to be properly shaped and needs to move in the right way. As for the woman, she has to have a healthy and congenial inner environment for the sperm to fertilize the egg. When the egg is fertilized, it moves into the uterus and attaches itself to the uterine lining, beginning a nine month period of growth.

When it comes to men, besides smoking, obesity, sexual problems, alcohol and drug consumption, genetic defects, these are some causes of male infertility:

- Low sperm count, impaired mobility or inability to fertilize the egg are the most common reasons for male infertility. As mentioned earlier, sperm needs to be properly shaped and has to move quickly toward the egg in order to fertilize it.
- Varicocele is a condition wherein the varicose vein in the scrotum doesn't cool the testicle properly, leading to reduced sperm count.
- Deficiency of testosterone.
- Repeated sexual transmitted diseases (STD's) can lead to scarring and blockage of the sperm passage.
- Problems with delivering sperm from the penis into the vagina.
- If you suffer from any of these conditions, consult your doctor. Remember there is hope.
