Everyone deserves to have the ability to lay their head on a pillow at night and drift off to sleep. But, for so many, this isn't what happens.

Be it the events of the day, the pressures that surround you or some other residing factor, not being able to sleep only complicates matters and adds to the stresses of what you are already experiencing.

Doctors are quite happy to test, prod and probe you and feed you plenty of pills and potions that they feel might assist you to get at least some sleep. These may work temporarily but they don't work long term, and you find yourself back in the Doctor's consulting room, desperate for their next 'well, if that didn't work, try this' scenario.

Sorry, but after years of putting myself through their trial and error methods, I lost all faith in Doctors and their 'standardized' ways of treating people with sleeping problems. I started thinking 'outside of the square' and stumbled across something that finally worked for me.

Here's an example.

How many people, including Doctors, have suggested you try counting sheep or something similar? It's the 'standard' response from people when they find out you have a sleeping problem. The silly part is, it actually works but NOT as you are currently doing it.

Let me explain.

What do you do when you start to count? You begin at one, right? Well, if you are using this method to get to sleep, the ONLY way this would EVER work is when you are bored senseless and you do go off to sleep but it is neither restful or relaxing. It also would be a very short sleep and you would find yourself starting from one again and counting off into oblivion! That's because you are counting in the WRONG DIRECTION!

You are looking for a result - SLEEP! To achieve it, there MUST be a start and finish point - the finish point being you getting to sleep. If you start counting from one, there is no structured end which makes this method unworkable and therefore undesirable. You are searching for regularity, not one off results.

Pick a figure close to 100 and work your way slowly backwards to zero, taking a slow deep breath with each counted number. This focus enables your mind to relax and gives you a finishing point to achieve. Your body relaxes with each deep breath and your mind remains focused on the important task of reaching your goal. Don't stress if you lose count. Just pick a number higher than the last one you remember and continue slowly counting backwards, remembering to take that deep breath with each number.

Is it self hypnosis? Who cares what label you attach to it - it works - that's ALL that counts!

This little exercise, coupled with a few other 'outside the square' exercises, allows me to get what used to be impossible - regular and relaxing sleeping patterns. Maybe it can help you as well.

It is really frustrating not able to sleep. You toss and turn on every side of your bed. Until you thought of every single detail you have done during the day. While most people can easily get a sleep even sitting on a chair, there are others who seem to to have trouble getting and staying asleep. This is one of a classic symptom of anxiety and stress.

Anxiety and stress are two different words to describe the same experience such as increased heart rate, abdominal discomfort or dizziness. While stress is normally a response to a threatening situation, anxiety is mostly caused by worry. Usually anxiety is observed as more short term. Anxiety ends when the triggering situation to cause this feeling ceased, while stress can last for weeks, months and even years.

Difficulty in sleeping is only one of the many signs if your life is clouding you with anxiety and stress. However, there are many other symptoms associated with stress and anxiety. Because each of us has a unique chemical make-up, the symptoms will vary from person to person. When anxiety is diagnosed, it can also generate many symptoms such as:

路 difficulty in concentrating
路 feeling restless, tensed and apprehensive
路 loss of appetite
路 specific obsession over stressful topics
路 depression
路 frequent feeling of crying for no apparent reason
路 constipation
路 difficulty swallowing


If you also find yourself worrying compulsively over going crazy, dying early, having a serious illness, or of being alone, these are also other symptoms of anxiety.
Stress can bring about risky mind and body disorders. If not given attention immediately, it can lead to other chronic health problems.
Common symptoms of stress are relatively the same as with anxiety. This also includes:

路 panic and anxiety attacks
路 over eating
路 mood swings and irritability
路 sadness or depression

Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling of apprehension or fear, while stress can come from any situation or a thought that makes you feel frustrated, nervous, angry or even anxious. When anxiety and stress starts affecting your everyday life and it is blown out of proportion, it's time to get help.

To gain relief from anxiety and stress, changes has to be made. Change the way you explain a situation to yourself. If possible, try not to veer away from situations that makes you feel anxious and be confident that you can cope with it. View events in your life as challenges that you can manage. Help yourself to find relief from anxiety and stress. Take a positive outlook in your life and motivate yourself that you can handle the situation when face with it.

Here are some practical ways to cope with anxiety and stress.

路 Calm yourself and relax.
路 Exercise regularly. It can improve your mood.
路 Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits to increase body energy.
路 Talk to your friends and your family about what is bothering you.
路 Meditate. This will also help you if you are having sleeping difficulty.

Anxiety and stress are a common feeling we experience in our everyday lives. However, life seems to torment us with new ways in stressing us and afflict us with anxiety. We just have to know how to deal with it. It is also better to speak up and talk to someone about your worries than keep it to yourself and forever suffer the consequence. There are available medications that can relieve the symptoms for anxiety and stress.

Remember that anxiety and stress are manageable and can be treated. Getting anxiety relief is really not hard to obtain. Now relax, and go get yourself some sleep!
