I’m in a continual state of alert regarding so-called cures for stress, depression and anxiety. I want to be aware of any new breakthroughs that happen and I also want to be equally aware of new solutions that simply offer false hope. Snake oils and magic bullets are offered to sufferers by the dozen, offering plenty of hope but little in terms of a permanent cure.

Snake oils and magic bullets are always associated with forms of quackery. More often than not it will be dietary supplements, potions, mysticism or new age remedies such as ayurvedic medicine, acupuncture, crystals, magnets and such like. However, snake oils and magic bullets can be provided by more trusted sources such as the medical community. An antidepressant drug being the main magic bullet that is anything but.

Another far less obvious magic bullet is provided by the ubiquitous food police. In our society, it is very difficult to go through a single day without experiencing interference from these well-meaning but misguided people who bang on and on about diet and how your eating habits are at the root of all of your ailments.

When it comes to excess weight then as we all know, over-eating will have a huge impact on your physical well-being. But can food really have an impact on your mental health and can it cure stress, depression and anxiety?

In short, no! The foods you eat and the fluids you drink CANNOT cause you to become stressed, anxious or depressed and they certainly cannot cure any of them and I’ll explain why right now.

The three main foods you are continually advised to restrict or even avoid are saturated fat, refined sugar and salt. And for your weight and your physical well-being, restricting your intake of these foods will provide a huge boost.

But, let’s ask a question: Does everybody who eats a poor diet with high levels of fat, sugar and salt enter into stress, depression or anxiety? The answer is a clear and absolute no! And conversely, does it follow that everyone who eats a good diet with low levels of the sinful foods and high levels of fresh fruit and vegetables lean meat, fish and chicken never enter into these illnesses?

Ah, that’s an interesting one isn’t it? Surely if healthy eating could help conquer these problems then anyone who eats a healthy diet would never experience stress, depression or anxiety. But it is blatantly obvious that such people aren’t immune from these problems.

Here’s another fact to realize about foods: In modern society, we are very lucky. There is an abundance of fresh food and it’s easily and cheaply available. But what about our forefathers? Go back to the pre-war years and you’ll see that life for most of them was very hard and food wasn’t anywhere near as plentiful as it is today. So did they all suffer from stress, depression and anxiety? Of course not!

Eating a healthy diet will not cure stress depression and anxiety and eating a poor diet won’t cause them either. This is because the cause of these problems lies totally beyond the foods that you eat and it should be quite clear to you that if you’re going to conquer stress, depression and anxiety then you can only do so by addressing and treating the root cause.

This is the reason why all of the snake oils and magic bullet solutions simply don’t work. They address everything else other than the root cause and apart from giving you a brief lift and lighter wallet, they will only provide temporary and illusory comfort.

You want to start a home business; most people want to work at home for several reasons. What’s your reason? Are you tired of having that boss breathing down your neck? Are you looking for something that can bring in some additional income for you or your family? Are you traveling too much in your current position and want to do something new? Whatever the reason, you’ve made the decision. It may appear like the perfect opportunity, working your own hours and not having anyone tell you what to do. Let’s be honest, amidst all of this home business paradise, there will be some stress involved and if the stress begins to overtake the amount of fun you should be having while working at home, it may be time to step back to see what has gone wrong.

One the most stressful aspects of running your own home based business is pay. Your pay may not be as you were used to when you were working for someone else. Having your own business doesn’t give you that weekly or bi-weekly paycheck you are used to. You knew about how much to expect and when to expect it. If overtime was offered, it meant extra money and again, you knew when it would be given to you. Chances are there was also a health care plan you could join at a reasonable cost as well as retirement benefits. Paid vacations are another benefit usually enjoyed by employees and in some cases sick days and personal time. However, you made that life changing decision and decided you wanted your own home based business.

When you are considering your home based business opportunity, you do need to realize that all of those things are going to go away. When you are working at home you are earning money and most times you will get paid once the job is turned in and approved. However, each week the amount of your check may be a little different. Sometimes it will be more, other times it could be less. If you are working with different companies, the income may come at different times and although all the different streams of income can add up to a tidy sum, there will be some stress involved if one or more of the streams is running a little slow.

It will be a rare home business opportunity in which the pay is made on the same day of the week by all of the different clients or customers and until you learn to adjust to this new style of income schedule, it can be a stressful environment. Additionally, taking some of that pay every time you get it and socking it away for taxes can also put a strain on the family budget. However, if the right plans are not made it will make income tax time much more stressful than it needs to be.

For most home based business opportunities, a regular, structured income can relieve a lot of the stress, but that is something you will have to design on your own. The income will come but not in one lump payment and getting used to it can take a few months of struggling until it finally sinks in.

That’s ok, it happens to all of us. I started my first home based business when I was 23 years old, and I let the stress get to me. I wasn’t getting paid what I thought I was going to, and then decided to stop that business and went back to work for someone else. What I didn’t realize at 23 was that if I would have stayed positive and kept my focus my business would have continued to grow. I know this because there are successful people still running that business that kept their focus.

I should have just taken some time off. One aspect many of us doing realize is that taking a day off is ok. Your business is not going anywhere, and taking time off can help you refocus. Take your mind off of your stress, work on your favorite hobby, or spend time with your family. Whatever it is, step away. You can then come back take a look at everything from the outside and reevaluate what you are doing. You’ll probably be surprised at what you find out.
