There's a lot of historic proof that detoxification diets have been a spring ritual for many centuries. Detox diets include fasting and have been used to cleanse the soul as well as the body. James Dillard, MD, who is the assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and author of "Alternative Medicine for Dummies," says, "Almost every religion has some type of fasting ritual — Lent, Ramadan, Yom Kippur...the Hindus and Buddhists fast, too."

So no 21st-century diet guru invented the idea of fasting to detoxify the body. It's been done for many, many centuries. The methods vary, but the objective is always the same. The idea is to clean out the old pipes, rid the body of waste, and get rid of the junk so that the body functions more efficiently.

The human body detoxifies itself naturally every day. The colon, the liver, the kidneys, and even the skin serve to remove toxins from the body. A detox diet is designed to speed up the process and perhaps do a little better job of cleansing.

Some detox diets consist ONLY of water. Water is the only liquid introduced into the system, and there are no solids. The time required for detoxification varies, according to which guru you ask.

Some detox diets consist of drinking only fruit juice and consuming no solid food. Some detox diets consist of drinking ONLY water, fruit juice, or some liquid designed for the purpose and taking diuretics and laxatives to hurry the cleansing process along.

There is no proof that a detox diet is dangerous to healthy individuals. There's no certain proof that a detox diet actually does much good, either. However, if you want to use a detox diet, you should first discuss it with your doctor and get his blessings, his advice, or perhaps even a prescription.

BONUS : Bulimia

There's a difference between anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Those who are anorexic never binge eat, and those who are bulimic do. That's the main difference. The methods used to lose weight are very similar. While an anorexic will never eat enough, a bulimic almost always eats enough, and very often eats far too much.

Eating binges are followed by purging. Self-induced vomiting is common, and so is the overuse of diuretics and laxatives. Both anorexics and bulimics use excessive enemas to effect weight control — or weight loss. Compulsive and extreme exercising is also common to both bulimics and anorexics.

Most people think that a person who has bulimia goes on an eating binge because of extreme hunger, but that's not the case. Hunger has nothing to do with the eating binge. Depression, stress, or self-esteem issues are the causes of binge eating. The bulimic who engages in a binge-eating episode feels out of control during the episode; but just after the episode, a sense of supreme calmness emerges. The calmness doesn't last long. Right on the heels of calmness comes a feeling of self-loathing, which prompts the use of extreme purging methods.

This binge eating/extreme purging cycle continues. Women (and it's almost always women) who are bulimic are usually of normal weight. They look perfectly normal, and some of them could even be slightly overweight. They are most often very high achievers and often hold high-powered, highly visible jobs.

The binging and purging that defines bulimia is hard to spot. Both are done in secret and behind closed doors.

The consequences of undiagnosed and untreated bulimia are serious. Tooth enamel will be lost, cavities will increase, and swelling and soreness of the

saliva glands is a given. It gets worse. Stomach ulcers, ruptures, and even heart attack and death are very real possibilities.
