Does Fasting Work?

It depends upon the purpose of the fast. Sometimes people will fast for the purpose of gaining spiritual insight. Sometimes people will fast as a protest against injustice. There are also fasting diets that usually include a drink concocted of odd ingredients for the purpose of detoxification. I can't say whether fasting under any of these circumstances is effective or not — I've never tried it, and I'm really not very likely to do so. I like to eat too much to NOT eat on purpose.

But the question of whether fasting does or does not work for the purpose of weight loss is pretty simple to answer: in a word, "NO."

Many of the fad diets of the past (and even some that show up on the radar today) promote starting a weight loss diet by fasting or at least reducing the intake of nourishment to a very low starvation level.

Mostly the weight lost during a short fast is water only, but here's what happens in the body during a fast:

During the first 12 to 15 hours of a fast, the liver will provide most of the glucose the body needs for survival. The liver maintains stores of glucose for this purpose. There's no fat loss involved. Once these stores have been depleted, the body begins converting some of the amino acids in proteins in the body to

energy, and this will cause an increase in nitrogen excretion in the urine. (No fat has yet been burned.)

After approximately two days, the body will begin to convert fat to fuel; but as it does so, it puts the entire body in survival mode so that less fuel is required by every system.

In the meantime, the body is sending urgent messages to the brain telling it that the body is in distress. The body is self-serving. The mission is always survival. So distress signals are sent to the brain. The brain receives these distress signals and sends out messages of its own, causing the stomach to feel discomfort and causing the appetite to increase.

The result is that when the fast ends, you'll eat enough to regain whatever small amount of weight that has been lost. Fasting does not work for weight loss.

Do the exercises work if you’ve had an injury? Pilates is renowned for helping prevent injury! And even those who’ve already suffered back, knee and joint injuries can find the slow and soothing movements of Pilates will help strengthen the muscles around those joints. It’s a low impact workout, so there’s no strain or pressure put on joints. This minimizes the risk of someone injuring themselves again.

Will it really help you improve your posture like you’ve heard? Because Pilates strengthens the core muscles of the abdomen and lower back, the entire body is better supported. This can help someone who’s been doing Pilates workouts walk taller and hold themselves straighter.

Does Pilates work to improve all the body’s systems? While this might seem to be a far-fetched claim, think about all that Pilates does. It strengthens the muscles while toning and trimming them. It strengthens the core muscles that support not only the spine but surrounds the body’s organs and holds them firm. So not only is posture improved, but because the entire abdominal wall is stronger, it offers more support for your internal organs.

People who do Pilates benefit from the deep breathing of the exercises and the controlled breathing and movement. So not only are your organs better supported, breathing is improved which helps put more oxygen into your bloodstream. It’s starting to get easier to see how Pilates can improve your overall health, isn’t it?

Does Pilates work if you’re really out of shape? Yes! The beauty of Pilates is that it doesn’t take long, grueling workout sessions to see benefits. A person who hasn’t exercised in a long time can start out doing just 5 or 10 minutes of Pilates movements at a time.

Because of the great strengthening benefits of Pilates, even a beginner can increase the time spent working out quite rapidly. Does Pilates work? Try it yourself, and you’ll be able to answer that much faster than you think!
