You wake up in the morning and head over to the gym for your workout. Along the way, you decide that you really aren't feeling very energetic, so you stop at the store for a cup of coffee. While you are paying for your coffee, you notice caffeine pills for sale at the counter. Hey, you need all the energy you can get for today's workout, right? Well, before you purchase those caffeine pills, let's really think about this.

Caffeine, although found in a variety of foods, is a drug. It is even considered a nutrient because it is in food, and there is still debate on this topic. For our purposes, however, let's consider the caffeine in your coffee as a nutrient, and the caffeine in that pill as a drug.

As a drug, caffeine contributes to raised blood pressure, an increase in heart rate, heart arrhythmia, dehydration, insomnia, anxiety, heartburn, headaches, and a multitude of other problems. On the plus side, caffeine has the ability to combat fatigue, makes one more alert, improves mental functions, and of course, improves athletic performance.

So, should you take it or should you leave it alone? Well, the standard opinion seems to be that caffeine in moderation is a good thing but caffeine in excess is bad - and even unhealthy. So, do you need to buy the pills along with that cup of coffee?

No, you don't. You are about to go work out. This will increase your heart rate already. Enjoy your cup of coffee and even if you aren't feeling energetic at the beginning of your workout, you will definitely feel energetic afterwards. This is because energy produces energy so in the end, you really didn't need the caffeine pills after all.

However, be sure to drink an extra glass of water to compensate for the cup of coffee that you had. Remember that caffeine dehydrates you and the general rule is to drink one extra glass of water for every cup of coffee or soda that you have.
