The Importance of Protein in Bodybuilding

If you've spent five minutes listening to two bodybuilders talk to each other, the chances are good that you've discovered that bodybuilders seem to have a love affair with protein. Everywhere you turn in the bodybuilding world, you will hear "protein, protein, protein, and more protein." What is this obsession with protein?

First, let's take a look at what protein is. Protein is the material that the human body uses to build. You can liken it to mortar used to build brick buildings. Without it, you can't build muscle. In fact, muscles literally feed on protein, and skin, nails, bones, hair, and connective tissue also are made from protein. Protein in the body has antibodies, and also includes hormones that are vital to our health.

You probably know that your body is 70% water. Are you aware that protein is the next substance in great abundance in the body? About 20% of your total body weight comes from the protein inside your body, and about 70% of that is located in the muscles. In order to gain weight, you must consume more calories than you burn. In order to gain muscle, you must consume more protein than your body uses up.

This is why bodybuilders are obsessed with protein. If you are not consuming enough protein to feed your muscles, not only do they not grow, they also weaken and shrink. Everybody needs protein to survive, but bodybuilders must replenish the body's supply of protein about every three hours, which is why the majority of them eat six meals a day. They do this because research has shown that exercise increases the need for protein. It gets used up.

So, how much protein is enough? Most bodybuilders agree that you need to take in one gram of protein for every point of weight that you have on your body. For example, if you weigh 180 pounds, you need 180 grams of protein per day. Ideally, bodybuilders take in 250% more protein than the RDA suggests. Note, however, that the RDA is actually meant for people who live sedentary lifestyles not for athletes.

BONUS : The Mental Side of Bodybuilding

You may see a really bulked up guy just rippling with muscles, and think he spends all of his time in the gym. You may think that there is nothing more to him than muscles and a nice smile. You are most likely wrong. There is an intense mental aspect to bodybuilding.

In fact, bodybuilders may be the most goal-oriented group of people in the world. They set goals specific goals and develop plans to reach those goals. They understand nutrition alsomore so than other people, with the exception of trained nutritionists. They understand the importance of rest, and know what to do to build the muscles that they want to build. There's more there than muscles.

In fact, there is a great deal more. You might think that bodybuilders have egos to match their large musclesand for the most part they do. They work hard to build their bodies, and they want to be recognized for it. Those egos are often hurt when they don't win competitions, but for the most part, they are very self-confident people who know what their achievements are, and can easily bounce back from a lost competition without a problem.

Bodybuilders are always striving to be better. For some, this creates a condition known as Bigorexia. The bodybuilder is huge, but feels very small. They never feel like they have accomplished their goal, because there is always a new goal. While this is a problem that many bodybuilders face, it isn't a problem that they all face. Again, most are fairly self-confident, and know very well the feeling of accomplishment.

Furthermore, bodybuilders come from all walks of life. They are doctors, lawyers, teachers, and other skilled professionals. In fact, some get so into bodybuilding that they leave their professions behind to become professional bodybuilders and trainers. So, the next time you look at a bodybuilder, realize that there is a great deal more there than just muscles and a nice smile. They are usually very intelligent people!
