The idea of the Mr. Olympia competition was conceived in 1963 by Joe Weider. He could see that the current bodybuilding contests were not going to provide a way for bodybuilders to make money from the sport. And he determined to do something about that. It took a while, but in 1965 the first Mr. Olympia contest was held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York, on September 18.

The crowd (and there was quite a crowd) was excited. They clapped their hands, stomped their feet, and yelled as loudly as they could. The cause of their excitement was a big, blond superstar from California with arms too big to believe by the name of Larry Scott. Scott won the first Mr. Olympia contest easily.

Larry Scott was the bodybuilding superstar of the late 1950s and early 1960s, but by 1963 he had done it all and there were no more worlds left to conquer. Scott had already won the Mr. America, Mr. World, and Mr. Universe titles, so there really wasn't anything left for him to prove. Scott already had a houseful of trophies and plaques, and he believed that it was time for him to move on from bodybuilding and make some money. That's where Joe Weider came in.

Mr. Weider wanted to keep Larry Scott in bodybuilding, and he could see that it was necessary to force the sport to grow. Joe Weider created the Mr. Olympia contest for the purpose of keeping all the great Mr. Universe champions active in the sport and to provide a way for them to earn money from competing in bodybuilding competitions. Weider could see that for the sport of bodybuilding to succeed in the future, the bodybuilding champions would have to be able to make a living from competing in the sport just like the professional athletes in other sports.

BONUS : Muscle-Building Mistakes

Building muscle mass is a process. Instant gratification isn't going to happen. If you want to build those big enviable muscles and have that toned body, you'll have to put in the work needed to achieve it. There aren't any shortcuts.

You want to build muscle, but you may have made some mistakes that actually impeded your progress. Here, in my opinion, are the three things that are most often done wrong in the muscle mass-building process:

1. Showing Off in the Gym: I'm putting this one first because it's the one that I most often witness with my own two eyes. There is a physical process that causes muscles to get larger. That process is first stressing muscles to the point that they develop small tears, and then resting and allowing the body to repair the damage and make the muscles larger and stronger in the process. There is NO other process to build muscle.

You stress muscle by repetitively lifting weights. The weight is important, but the repetitions are equally important. I see guys come into the gym, look around at the big well-developed guys and then load their bars with more weight than they should just to impress the onlookers. That is SO wrong! Form suffers, and loading too much weight on the bar forces your body to "cheat" by enlisting the aid of other muscles to do the work the "target" muscles can't. That's counterproductive!

2. The Failure to Set Short-Term Goals: All newbies to bodybuilding set their long-term goal. They know where they want to be. But they fail to set the short-term goals that they need to achieve along the way.

3. Not Keeping a Journal: Tracking your bodybuilding achievements is important — no, VITAL to your success. It's sometimes hard to keep on keeping on but if you keep a journal and see that you ARE making progress, it's easier to stay on point.
