Gloves, Belts, and Straps

Some things are simply not optional for lifting weights. Three such essential items are gloves, belts, and straps.

Gloves: Unless you've been doing hard labor for a lot of years and have well-calloused hands, you're going to have to have some weightlifting gloves. The good news is that you aren't going to have to mortgage the farm to buy weightlifting gloves. Good ones are relatively inexpensive.\

Traditionally weightlifting gloves have been made of leather and fully enclosed. The problem has always been that as you sweat, these fully enclosed leather gloves trap the moisture and make your hands hot and uncomfortable. A newer version of the weightlifting glove is called a "grip." Grips are not enclosed. They fit over the palm of your hand and are held in place with adjustable straps. Moisture can escape, and your hands stay more comfortable.

Belts: It isn't necessary to start out doing your squats and dead lifts with a weight belt, but as you progress and get to the point where you are lifting more challenging weights, you are going to have to have a good four-inch weight belt for weightlifting safety.

A note: You should use a weight belt ONLY when doing exercises that put your lower back at risk. The weight belt should be removed when you are doing other exercises. Don't use the weight belt like a girdle to hold in your midsection. Overuse of a weight belt can actually impede your muscle mass-building workout results.

Straps: Weightlifting straps let you perform some exercises (like shrugs and dead lifts) using heavier weights than your grip strength would usually allow for. A weightlifting strap wraps around the barbell and attaches to your wrist.

BONUS : Great Muscle Building Tips To Add To Your Routine

Building muscles takes much more than showing up in the gym and simply lifting some weights. There are a lot of different factors that can contribute to the success or failure of your muscle building efforts. Look at the following tips to find out how to get the best results.

Always include the "big three" exercises in your training schedule. These body-building exercises include dead-lifts, bench presses and squats. These exercises make you bulkier as well as helping to condition your body and increase strength. Include variations of them in your regular workout routines.

Staying hydrated is vital to muscle building. Failing to maintain proper hydration leaves you susceptible to injury. Plenty of water is also needed to help you maintain and increase your muscle mass.

You should eat one hour before and one hour after a workout. If you are new to working out, any snack that is high in protein will do. As you get more involved in building muscle, you can get more meticulous in measuring your protein and planning out your meal schedule with more detailed attention and intention.

Make sure to use proper form. Simply picking up some weights and lifting without proper form will not build muscle effectively, and can even result in injury. For your initial reps with a new exercise, do them facing a mirror. This will help you make sure your form is correct.

Keep track of your own personal records for weight lifting. Increase your weights by 5% every other time you work out to better your records. You may also set goals for number of repetitions to do at different weights. It will give you motivation to better your previous results.

Stay away from steroids no matter what some experienced weight lifters tell you. There are side effects, including slowing the body's production of natural hormones. Steroids also cause liver damage and can reduce your good cholesterol levels which can lead to breast tissue in men. Steroids also cause "roid rage" and are a cause for acne. That doesn't sound like a lot of fun does it?

Building muscles requires an increase of food to fuel your body and feed your muscles. You would want to consume the required food in order to gain an average of one pound per week. Look into ways you can take in more calories. If you don't see any changes in your weight within two weeks, try consuming an even higher amount of calories.

Know your body and it's limits. This can help you to develop an effective plan and set solid, yet realistic goals when it comes to your exercise regimen. Body weight and composition are two important factors to consider during this kind of evaluation.

Developing good technique is the most important factor in weight lifting, ahead of speed, frequency of exercise or even how much weight is used. Every exercise needs to be practiced to ensure correct execution. If you practice early on when you're using lighter weights, it'll be easier than if you have to relearn the technique later.

You should only do a complete muscle-building workout every other day. Taking days off is important, as this gives your body time to recuperate. Excessive workouts make you more vulnerable to injuries and can end up causing more harm than good.

You must eat carbohydrates, if you want to build muscle. Carbohydrates helps give your body the energy it needs to properly do your exercises. Make sure that you understand that you should be consuming around two or three grams of carbohydrates for just about every pound of your body weight.

If you are going to use creatine supplements to assist with your muscle gain, you should use caution, especially when taking them for an extended period of time. Make sure not to use these types of supplements at all if you have any type of kidney problem. There are other potential side effects, such as heart arrhythmia, muscle compartment syndrome and cramping. Creatine should be especially avoided by the young. Try to ensure that you use the supplements safely if you decide you are going to integrate them into your workouts.

Focus on goals that you can really meet when you start building muscle. Good results come incrementally over months of working out. Trying to build muscle quickly using stimulants, steroids or other potentially harmful substances can damage your body, and in some cases actually lead to serious health risks and consequences.

If you are trying to build muscle, be diligent when it comes to diet and fluid consumption. Muscles are made up of about 70 percent water, so consuming enough water is crucial. Also limit alcohol consumption, which has been shown to reduce muscle fibers when used excessively.

After reading this article, you should be aware of how easy it is to change your daily habits to incorporate techniques for successful muscle building. Now that you've got a good foundation for your muscle-building program, you are ready to start working toward your ideal body.
