Your body has no intention of building muscle. Muscle is required only if it is needed for survival. The body sees body fat as insurance against future starvation, and it readily stores excess calories as fat. It does not view big muscles as a requirement for survival; survival is the goal, and so it does not build unnecessary muscle. Bodybuilders aren't crazy about the way the body responds to excess calories, but nobody is going to change the way the body works without making the body totally uncomfortable.

The body responds to a threat to its survival. That is the only thing that will change what the body does with excess calories. The body is actually a wonderful, self-sustaining machine that no machine ever built on earth comes close to duplicating. The body is actually designed to make repairs to itself. When it is hurt, it rushes to "fix" the damage.

So if you want your body to build muscle mass, you're going to have to hurt your muscles (actually damage your muscles) in order to force your body to build new muscle. You must demand more of your muscle than it is capable of delivering. That is, you have must lift more and more weight, more and more often, to the point where the muscle fails.

Small tears develop in the muscle when it is stressed. Failure of a muscle is seen by the body as a threat to its existence, so it rushes aid to the muscle. The body builds additional muscle tissue to repair the small tears. This makes the muscle bigger. It also makes the muscle stronger so that it can handle that level of stress in the future.

As you keep upping the ante (lifting heavier and heavier weights), your body will respond by building more muscle. You can't stay within your comfort zone. If you're comfortable, your body is not going to build more muscle because it doesn't have to.

However, it is easy to be fooled by the information concerning supplements so use caution.

For best results, hire a personal trainer for the break-in period. Most personal trainers charge a reasonable affordable amount of money to get you through the break-in period and introduce you to the world of bodybuilding. They will instruct you on properly executing the exercises, on proper nutrition, and help you select supplements that are right for you. A good trainer will require that you get clearance from your doctor before they start working with you. If they do not request this find a different trainer.

It is only after you have gathered and learned the information concerning bodybuilding that you need that you should start working out. Again, a good personal trainer will help you to get started. It is a mistake to jump into this game on your own, and if you do it this way, you will make mistakes that will not only hinder your bodybuilding, but could also cause injuries that are lifelong!
