A good trainer will ask you to get a doctor's clearance before working with you. If they do not request this, they probably don't care much about the well-being of their clients. The trainer should not work with you until you have this. The trainer should also take the time to learn what your overall bodybuilding goals are, and get to know your personality a bit. They will also ask about other areas of your life such as your work schedule, family commitments, etc. They need to know how much time you can commit to the program, in order to create a program that will work for you and get results.

A good trainer will work with you on your form when you are working out, and they will also pay attention to your nutrition, supplements, and even your periods of rest, understanding that all of this combined makes up bodybuilding. The trainer should motivate you, make you feel comfortable, and should also be on top of the latest information that relates to bodybuilding and nutrition.

Finally, a good trainer will always be on time and will be in very good shape. It's hard to be motivated by a trainer who is feeding on pizza while you are drinking a protein shake. It's also hard to listen to a trainer who has a potbelly, instead of a six-pack!
