If you are 40 years old or older, you may have decided that bodybuilding is a younger person's sport. You may think that because you are over 40, and out of shape, that you couldn't possibly hope to compete with the younger crowd, and especially not with other people around your age who have been bodybuilding since their teens.

If this is what you think, you are wrong. It doesn't matter when you start bodybuilding the only thing that matters is that you do start, and that you do it right. First, note that you can't get up after spending 20 years on the couch and jump right into bodybuilding no matter how strong you think you are. This is a good way to injure yourself. The muscles have to grow and tone slowly it doesn't happen overnight.

You may have heard that 40 is the new 20 or that 50 is the new 30. It's true. We are healthier and living longer and staying active and in good shape for longer as well. So, stop thinking of yourself as "old" if you are 40. You are just getting started!

Next, find a gym that is convenient for you. Then, find a personal trainer and a nutritionist. Yes, this costs money but in bodybuilding, it is money well spent. Your personal trainer should require you to get a physical exam from your doctor before they will work with you. This isn't because of your age a good trainer will even do this with a 20-year-old.

Also, make sure that you have the name and number of a good massage therapist, if one isn't available at your gym, or your personal trainer is not also a massage therapist. This isn't a luxury. This is part of the bodybuilding process. Massage therapy has numerous benefits.

Now, with all of that in place, you are well on your way. Listen to the advice of your trainer and nutritionist. Purchase the supplements that they recommend, attend your workout sessions, and be prepared to work. It won't happen overnight, but the chances are good that you have some very noticeable improvements within two or three weeks no matter what age you are.
