Antioxidants are important for the body to neutralize the presence of free radicals. These toxins seep into the cells as a response to the elements and other stressors.

Because there are so many naturally occurring antioxidants, the United States Department of Agriculture devised a scale of potency for specific foods. The number assigned to each food represents its antioxidant content or potential.

The scale, named oxygen radical absorbance capacity (or ORAC), simply indicates the strength of the antioxidants within that food. The higher the number, the more drastic the effects. Below we have listed some of the foods with highest ORAC ratings. Don't be scared by the numbers; they can be astronomical at times.

Cinnamon: Fresh ground cinnamon has an ORAC rating of 267,536. As far as longevity is concerned, cinnamon is one of the most powerful anti-aging, antioxidant spices.

Beans: These have an ORAC rating between 4000 and 15,000. From black beans to red kidney beans, all beans are high in antioxidants.

Raw fruits: These contain high levels of antioxidants, thus rating highly on the ORAC scale. This rating is based on one cup of fruit. High on the list are blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, prunes, and apples.

Artichokes: Also high up on the list are artichokes, with well over 7900 points on the ORAC rating. Other fruits and vegetables with similar amounts include broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and garlic.

Likewise, aim for three healthy meals in addition to several snacks.

Make your home your own. As we get older, we may find that we are not living in the place that we once thought was going to be home for the rest of our days. If you recently moved to a new home, you can help yourself to feel more comfortable and relaxed by placing your special belongings in the areas where you spend the most time.

Exercise is quite important as you age. Even though your running tempo may be slower than it was in your younger years and the amount of weight you can lift has lessen, there are still many ways you can include a lower-impact fitness routine in your daily routine. Walking is easy to do, and is great exercise. Find a gym or community center with an available pool if you enjoy being in the water. Try learning some stretches you can perform at home. Aging delicately is a common goal we all share, but something that is hard to accomplish alone. Find someone older than you, and learn from them. Older people are full of wonderful knowledge, and can really teach you a lot about living a long, healthy life. This will be more helpful to you if you can find a person who is happy and healthy while in their later years.
