The Mediterranean Diet

You've likely heard of Mediterranean diets that are supposed to be the very thing to help you lose the unwanted pounds you are packing around while allowing you to eat all kinds of good stuff during the process. It sounds like an excellent idea, doesn't it?

Actually there is no such thing as one single "Mediterranean" diet. Lots of countries border on the Mediterranean Sea. And the diets of the people who live in those countries vary not only from country to country, but also from region to region within those countries.

So-called Mediterranean diets generally follow these rules:

* The main feature is a lot of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts, and seeds.
* Olive oil is the usual source of fat.
* Fish and poultry are the featured meats, and then only in small-size servings. Beef is almost never eaten.
* Eggs are rarely included.
* Only small amounts of wine are allowed.

So the question is, are Mediterranean-style diets healthy? Do they meat the guidelines set up by the American Heart Association, for example?

The answer to those questions is that the overall Mediterranean-style diet comes close to meeting American dietary standards — close, but not completely. Actually, a relatively large number of calories consumed on most Mediterranean diets are calories from fat. It's important to note that obesity is a growing (pun intended) problem in all of the Mediterranean countries.

However, the average Mediterranean diet is far healthier than the average American diet, and lot less saturated fat is consumed. It is also important to note that the incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean countries is far lower than it is in the United States, as well.

Actually, more research needs to be conducted on Mediterranean diets before we'll know for sure whether they are good or bad.

BONUS : The Most Obese Man-Hes Losing-So Can You

The world’s most obese Man, Manuel Uribe, has managed to lose 600 pounds. He started at a weight of about 1300 pounds. And without even being able to get out of bed, the world’s most obese man has lost the equivalent of 3 large men.

For the people who have trouble exercising because of disabilities or health reasons, this should be considered good news. His ability to exercise is restricted because he’s unable to move around or even stand. This obese man has been in the same bed for over 6 years, unable to rise.

That he can lose hundreds of pounds over the course of about two-and-a-half years is good news for other struggling dieters. He’s proven that it can be done without strenuous exercise. He did movements that a person could safely do while sitting in bed. Anyone can do these types of movements.

Anyone can also follow the same diet plan as the world’s most obese man. Manuel had weight loss surgery long before he started dieting to lose weight. It was unsuccessful and caused severe swelling. He lost no weight after the surgery.

The only thing that worked for him was a carefully controlled diet. When he went on television in Mexico to plead for help, his wife had left him, the surgery hadn’t worked, and he had no income. He was offered more surgery.

But he also got an offer of help from Dr. Barry Sears who wrote the bestselling diet book, The Zone Diet. Uribe chose Dr. Sears’ offer over all the other offers he had. He began following the diet carefully in about March of 2006 and by October 2008 had shed almost 600 pounds.

After getting down below 800 pounds, the most obese man still cannot get out of bed. His legs are too heavy and he is unable to lift them. But he’s optimistic that he’ll soon lose enough weight that he’ll be able to get out of the bed for the first time in years.

The Zone Diet is a low carbohydrate diet. It’s not as restrictive on carbohydrates as other popular low-carb plans like Atkin’s. On the Atkin’s diet, you start out unable to eat 10 grams of carbs per day. On the Zone Diet, you can have more carbs because the focus is on the combination of foods you eat.

The theory behind the diet is that each time you eat you need to eat a carefully controlled balance of fat, protein and carbohydrates. It’s the balance between them that allows your body to lose weight.

Aside from why it works, it’s obvious that it does work. When someone who can’t even get out of bed follows the diet and can drop massive amounts of weight, it’s obvious it will work for the average dieter.

Manuel still has lots of weight to lose. But he has incentive to keep going. Even still unable to get out of the bed, the world’s most obese man married his girlfriend in October of 2008.
