Diets For Athletes

Diets for Athletes

Athletes at every level have special dietary needs. Athletic activities facilitate a more rapid burn of energy over short periods of time.

We all watched Michael Phelps shatter all of those Olympic swimming records and rack up the most amazing gold medal count in history at the Beijing Summer Olympics of 2008. Michael ate an amazing amount of food, too. If there were a gold medal offered for "number of calories consumed at a single setting," he would most likely own that gold medal as well.

Now, I'm a big Michael Phelps fan. I'm sure not going to call him "skinny," but he is, well, thin. How can that be? He eats like the proverbial horse, and yet you'd be hard pressed to find a single molecule of fat on that fit (but thin) body.

Michael burns all of those calories that he consumes. That's the secret to weight control for all athletes as well as for the rest of us. Calories in versus calories out are what determine body weight. There's no magic.

Some athletes mistakenly believe that when they are in training for a marathon, for example, they can just eat all they want of whatever they want and whenever they want. BIG MISTAKE! Remember, it's always calories in versus calories out.

Diets for athletes need to be carefully calculated, and adjustments need to be made as needed. It's best for an athlete or his trainer to get a good calorie burn chart that lists activities and the rate of calorie burn per minute when engaging in them and adjust the athlete's diet accordingly.

Usually it's best for an athlete to eat a small pre-event meal that consists of only 500 to 1,000 calories. This rule does not apply to events that demand that athletes expend a great deal of energy over very short periods of time.

BONUS : Diets for Children

It's amazing how many young children are seriously overweight today. Who is to blame? Television commercials can shoulder a lot of the blame, but

parents must take responsibility for what children are watching on the tube and what kinds of food is being advertised to them….as well as what foods they are eating, how much, and when.

Junk food isn't found only on the candy aisle in the grocery store. A lot of junk food is disguised as healthy breakfast cereals. Wieners and peanut butter and jelly are all loaded with fat and/or calories. Potato chips, cookies, and snack cakes aren't innocent bystanders.

The public school cafeterias have been under a great deal of pressure to change their menus and eliminate foods that kids like but that are anything but healthy. Kids eat one meal a day at school. They eat the other two at home — and most snacking is done at home as well — and yet nobody seems to be upset about the usual diet of most children while they aren't in school.

Kids eat what's available. If a candy bar and a bag of chips is available, they'll eat them. On the other hand, if an apple and whole wheat crackers are available, that's what they'll eat.

Fast food isn't home cooking. Fast food isn't health food, either. Busy parents often opt to stop on their way home for take out for their family dinner. This is a really, really bad choice. Healthier choices can be made that aren't much trouble. Look in the frozen food section — there you'll find family-size meals that are much healthier than the ones that you pick up at the take-out window.

Provide your kids (and yourself) with healthy food choices at home. Microwave popcorn is low calorie as compared to chips and dips. Kids will eat healthy if they are given healthy food choices!
