Transcendental meditation is a program of meditation that is proven to lower levels of stress, focus the mind, and improve the memory of those who meditate twice per day. Developed by Mararishi Mahesh Yogi, this system of meditation is taught in seven steps at centers established in 140 countries across the world. Due to such widespread reach, over six million people have learned the program.

Transcendental Meditation is a mental technique of meditation, which allows every person to learn the skill, regardless of physical disabilities. This gives it an edge over some other forms of meditation, which require certain methods of breathing and physical exercises and stretches in order to be effective. By encouraging the body and mind to enter into a state of rest, you can still and quiet your thoughts until you are left in a state of awareness that is calm and peaceful. Learning Transcendental Meditation is done through a series of courses taught be teachers educated by Mararishi Mahesh Yogi. The fee you pay for the courses covers the base seven lessons, and a lifetime of support and advanced lectures and lessons.

The benefits of Transcendental Meditation are varied. Scientific studies have proven that the rest that is associated with this form of meditation is more valuable, by a notable margin, than the standard sleep cycles. When you take a Transcendental Meditation course, you are assigned a mantra that allows you to focus and concentrate on the principles of the meditation. This mantra is selected by your instructor and given to you. As you progress through the training of the Transcendental Meditation mantras, you are asked to keep your mantra a secret.

There is much speculation on why the Transcendental Meditation Mantras are so secret, although many people believe it is because that is the primary focus of the program. As the program is paid for by the students, the operators of the program do not want the Transcendental Meditation Mantras to be released to the general public.

If you are uncertain of whether Transcendental Meditation mantras are right for you, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. First, the mantra should be something that is private and personal to you. If you are assigned a mantra that does not bring the right sensations, or does not fulfill the goals you are attempting to obtain, you should change your mantra. It is believed that the Transcendental Meditation mantras are based off of the Hindu religion and the principles of the Hindu religion. If you are non-religious, or cannot bear the idea of using a mantra that is based off of Hindu, you will want to go through the process of selecting mantra suitable for you. Many Christians, for example, will use a favorite prayer as their mantra, as this allows them to feel a closer tie with their God. Other religions will use prayers that help them become closer with their deities. What is important, no matter what mantras you select, is that you focus on your purpose in meditation.
