The Causes of Hair Thinning and Graying

Like we discussed in one of our previous newsletters, hairs are comprised of keratin and pigments produced by tiny cells called melanocytes. It's the product of these cells that gives our hair its color, and keratin provides it with structural integrity and strength.

Hairs emerge from blood vessel-powered germ centers that secrete the hair strands, pushing them out of the follicle. They are continually shed and replaced during our adult years, and production declines as the years go by.

Thinning: As aging takes its toll, germ centers within the follicles on the skin become damaged, and as a result, the follicle produces a thinner, weaker hair called a vellus hair. More common among men but prominent in both sexes, thinning can sometimes appear as balding. The new, finer hairs are so thin that they can barely be observed by the naked eye. But this isn't the case; the hair is there. It's just too thin to see.

Graying: In other cases, the melanocytes within the follicle halt the production of melanin and phaeomelanin. Over time, they produce reduced amounts of the pigment. The hair then loses its color and appears lighter. Although the term "graying" implies a gray color, this hair is not really gray.

The lack of melanin and phaeomelanin cause the hair to lose it color, turning it white. A combination of white hair and colored hairs give the head a gray appearance.

There are no rules about how early or late in life your hair will show signs of aging. A combination of lifestyle, diet, and genetic factors all affect the prematurity of graying, thinning, and hair loss. Some don't experience graying until middle age, while others develop white hairs in their mid 20s, going grey even before their mid 30s.

Changes in the Skin: As we age, wrinkles and sagging skin are awfully common. With menopause, the changes in the skin on our face become more noticeable. With cell disorganization ruling the hypodermis and a diminished production of collagen brought on by aging, our skin shows uneven in texture and tone.

Skin's moisture retention declines with menopause, which increases our chance of developing creases and lines. As the skin is dehydrated, dark circles become more prominent and the eyes appear more sunken in.

Changes in the Breasts: With menopause, all muscles and skin are prone to softening and sagging. Breasts are mainly composed of fat, so with aging the fat cells lose order and deposit themselves in specific spots, diminishing the smoothness and evenness of the breasts.

Fat deposits, while disorganized, are also increased as mammary gland tissue declines. This aids the breast in losing its shape and roundness. As muscles get soft in the pectoral area, the breasts seem to be overly affected by gravity. Because of the dehydration of the skin and its thinning, stretch marks darken and become more visible.

Changes in our Privates: The genitals also become significantly affected with the onset of menopause. Because of uneven fat accumulations, the skin surrounding the vagina is more prone to wrinkling. As collagen and ellastin are slowly depleted, the skin's ability to stretch and flex declines.

The skin surrounding and inside the vagina thins, making it more prone to tearing and breaking. In addition, infections of the vagina and urinary tract are more prevalent in response to diminished immune function and general changes in our reproductive system.
